Queenstown, a small but very beautiful town, over looking the mountains and the peaceful lake...

Other than the post-card-like scenery, I found some interesting artworks at the weekend craft market, by the wharf.

It was a warm and sunny day, perfect weather to go to any outdoor market or just chill out at the park.

This little booth immediately caught my eyes when I got there.
Heartfelt, the specialist in handfelted apparel by June & Graham Cooper.
Though they're quite busy at the booth, I still managed to talk to the artist. They're from Christchurch. Due to the recent earth quake in Christchurch, they moved down to Queenstown for the weekend market.

It was my day off. Another day of wandering on the streets of Auckland.

Never really gone up to Upper Queen Street, but when I was turning to K Road this time, this shop caught my eyes.

From the out side, it's just a small little work shop, but look who's standing right at the entrance?

These are magnificent! They are all made of metal sheets, bolts, washers, various sizes of screws, metal chains, etc... It is not just an exhibition, they are all for sale! Prices range from a couple of hundreds to 9K+ (NZ$) depends on sizes and designs.

Salute!! once again to handmade artist!

Auckland Art & Craft Fair, 11th Dec 2010

It's a one-day-only art & craft fair that happened in Auckland for the 2nd time (the 1st one was in July), and I'm lucky enough to have been there! (lucky enough cause I'm off today, ha!)

Similar to Arts for Grab & Pipit Wonderful Market in Malaysia, the fair featured NZ local independent designers, artists and crafters work, selling direct to the public.

I saw jewelleries, cards, stationery, t-shirts, bags, shoes, plushies, etc. etc... they were awsome! The details, the workmanship, let alone the time spent but the love that they've put into each pieces, even the set up of their stalls...

You will find different design styles and concepts, which some, you can never seen in Malaysia.

I'm here to share these with all the fellow crafters and designers, after some careful organization of cards and contacts :)

It's a very nice venue, you don't need to worry about the weather.

Karin Jewellery. I love one of their feather pendant SO much! Unfortunately I still got to save for my trips :(

Cheek Pinchy. Nice motifs & colours with lots of varieties from earrings, pendants to brooches.

Hydrangea Ranger. Oh, I must mention about their creativity on their call cards. See that bowl of B&W photos? That's their call card!! So cool!!

ZippityDooDah. Elizabeth made wonders with zippers!

Hunter Gatherer. Looking at the bows make me think of Curt in Glee :) But these are supposed to be on your head... Gem & Natheniel have some very interesting pendant too!

Don't you love that center-piece? Ferrit produces pendant, brooches and accessories, drawn on/print on fabric. My first impression was "Gun N' Roses"

Plastic Fairy. The brooches are awesome!!

Honey Design. Hand bound books & photo albums.

Little owl says: "Meri Kerithmete", by Lily. Lily has some very interesting work made of map cutouts!

Unbelievable! Handmade shoes!! And I found it in an art fair!! By Spirocreations.

Tui. 'To paint with light' was printed in the card. I wonder what does it means? It's all black & white, but still, very eye catching.

Ceramics can fly. It's out of your imagination what form of ceramics you can find on that table :)

Harllo... I'm back from the Wonderful Market!! Met lots of Wonderful people, saw many Wonderful designer stuff, and being surprised by my Wonderful friends who actually came and support (especially Looi & hubby came all the way from Johor, though I know you're just "passing by KL, hahaha, but I really appreciate it!), and I had a Wonderful day!! ... tired though... hehehe...

A very tiring weekend!! But the response to our handmade items was great! 'Record breaking' I would say, hahaha... (although I've lost 2 brooches... some sticky fingers around, GGggrrrr...)

This year was quite purely show casing and selling. Yet, we still enjoyed ourselves very much! Hehe, I've tried something new like wall climbing at the Rakan Muda booth. Ling took some pix of me, hahaha, but I'm not gonna post it here... friends do check out my FaceBook ;P

Bought 2 Japanese fabrics earlier. What attracts me was the gold on the fabric.
They are too beautiful, I cannot decide what to do with them. It will be nice to use them to make the small purse, but the fabric alone is too soft to be in shape. Hence, I decided to do Meream's rosette again ;p, and uses quite a lot of the sewing machine on the design (including the Boo-ka-dat and also some few up coming designs)
The rosette is detachable.

I like this one so much! Yes, it is very time consuming, but once I finished, wow... it's all worth the time!

When I first came up with the sketch I'm not sure whether this design works. Especially the yellow thread part. Luckily it turns out to be 'not that fragile', hahhaa...

Hello... it's something new from cassettee!
This is a canvas zipper case (I don't know what to call it actually), use for.... mm... definitely not a pencil case as it is done with a nice lining inside. Maybe it is good to use to store your make-up kit for your night out!

This thing is hand-painted, with button deco.

Hello, it has been some time I didn't update my blog.

Hehehe... I came up with some new little pillow brooches! They come in many different colours, different theme, different story... these are all very limited edition, it will be the only one, because I'm not planning to repeat on doing the same design for these little pillow brooches.

I'll do more of these, cause personally I like them so much, hehehe.... (i'm so thick skinned, muahahaha...)

WHEN Chris Wong started losing her hair due to chemotherapy, she realised just how precious her tresses were. In bed and slowly recovering from treatments for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), Chris wished for the day when her head would be covered once again with thick, black hair.

The day finally came, and with it came the inspiration to create the caricature of her alter ego, Chrisom.

“She is the persona of me on paper. I drew her with lots of hair, similar to my hairstyle before I fell sick,” says 25-year-old Chris.

Chrisom, “born” two years ago, still sports the same hairstyle and so does Chris now.

“My mother is a hairstylist. She gave me this cut long ago and I’ve been keeping it ever since,” she adds.

The art instructor from Johor Baru was in Kuala Lumpur last weekend to participate in the Art for Grabs sale and exhibition held in The Annexe in Central Market.

At the event, Chris was raring to introduce Chrisom – painted meticulously on small wooden boxes – to the public.

“I got the idea to put the caricature on boxes just last month. There was a sudden need for me to introduce Chrisom to the world and I thought what better way than by putting her on the wooden boxes that my father is good at making,” says Chris.

Her father lovingly makes the boxes – from pencil cases to jewellery holders – for Chris to paint on, and she is selling them for the first time at the Art for Grabs bazaar.

“The reception has been quite good. Many visitors like the design and I’m having fun meeting people here,” says Chris.

Phang Chin Ling, 22, also had fun mingling with “artsy” people of her kind and those interested in art at the bazaar.

A member of the Hugo Garden group from New Era College in Kajang, Selangor, Chin Ling and her friends were there to sell their collective works, ranging from decorative mugs and one-of-a-kind notebooks to key holders.

“The group was initiated by our part-time lecturer, who is now our branding consultant,” says Chin Ling.

The Hugo Garden members experiment with various designs and art forms and set up stalls at local exhibitions, harnessing and polishing their entrepreneurial skills.

Hugo Garden is the translation of the Mandarin words hua guo shan, which refers to the mountain abode of Monkey King, a pivotal figure in the classical Chinese folklore, Journey to the West.

In the tale, the mountain is a haven to Monkey King and his followers, just like how Hugo Garden is a “refuge” to Chin Ling and her 11 other team members.

“Being in this group allows us to be creative and put our talents to good use,” says Chin Ling, who excels at perking up plain and boring notebooks with her quirky designs.

Chin Ling is quick to add that they did not form the group with the sole purpose of making money, but rather to get more acquainted with people from different races and share ideas.

“Most of us are from Chinese schools and even our college is a community institute founded by the Chinese education movement, Dong Jiao Zhong. Our lecturer thought that we were too shy and conservative, so he got us to do this to build our confidence. We’re glad that we got together to form Hugo Garden because we are having a good time now,” she says.

Another young artist who is not too bothered by the amount of money she makes from her works is 25-year-old Cassie Wong. The advertising and promotional executive took her passion for decorating T-shirts and shoes up another level, and started selling them at bazaars actively.

“I’m really doing this for pleasure’s sake and not depending on it as a source of income,” says Cassie. Her brand, Cassettee, offers items such as T-shirts and brooches, mostly adorned with two of her favourite decorative items – buttons and beads.

She’s contemplating adding accessories design to her resume.

Cassie admits that her parents think that she is wasting her time concentrating on such labour intensive tasks, but it is something that she wants to do.

“My production is slow because I do everything by myself and I cannot just concentrate on this project alone as I have a full-time job as well,” says Cassie, who sees Cassettee more as a hobby than as a secondary career.

A veteran at bazaar scenes, Cassie is happy to note that her items do catch people’s attention and that she does get orders from her pals.

“My friends have been very supportive of Cassettee and encourage me to move forward with the brand,” says Cassie.

Best friends Azizah Osman and Shazleen Md Affandi have always toyed with the idea of starting a business together.

Visitors to the Art for Grabs bazaar were an enthusiastic lot, stopping at almost every booth and buying the items they liked.

When they were roommates back in their college days at Universiti Institut Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Shah Alam, Shazleen and Azizah did discuss whether they should put their talents to good use and earn some extra income while at it.

Shazleen is known for her artistic flair in designing bags while Azizah is good at bakiing cookies and cakes which have been a hit among their friends.

“I’ve been interested in baking since I was young but had only seriously started baking for the purpose of selling a couple of months ago,” says 22-year-old Azizah.

Her mother, an avid baker, is her inspiration and partner when it comes to the work.

“My mother and I stayed up till very late just to finish baking these cookies for the bazaar. I stayed up for another couple of hours, putting frosting on the cookies while my mum rested,” she adds.

Shazleen, on the other hand, recruited her boyfriend, Muhd Ikhwan Abdul Samad, and her younger sister, Elanni, to help with simple tasks like cutting the cloths or simple sewing.

“I make my bags from scratch, using materials that I buy on eBay. I usually draw out the design on paper before transferring it to the bag, but sometimes when inspiration hits me, I just do it directly, free hand,” says Shazleen, 22.

The girls hope to take their business a step further by becoming constant figures at local bazaars and exhibitions. Azizah says that she’s already getting orders from her friends and other customers, and if everything goes well, she and her mother plan to open a store next year.

“It all depends on the demand, though. We’re going to work from home and see if the business is worth expanding into a store,” she says.

“But for that to happen, we need people to support young entrepreneurs like us. They can do so by buying locally made products,” says Azizah.

PEOPLE often refrain from buying art pieces because they are too expensive, said Pang Khee Teik. The Annexe Gallery Arts Programme director believes that some artists put high prices on their artworks simply because they think it is the only way for them to sustain their business.

However, such pricing also puts off potential art buyers who cannot afford the exorbitant prices. “That’s the main reason why Art for Grabs was set up,” said Pang.

Over the last weekend, all kinds of artists congregated in The Annexe, Central Market in Kuala Lumpur, selling their works at prices that are less than RM100. That’s the rule if you want to sell your stuff at Art for Grabs – the items must be priced at less than RM100, and the items must be original – that is, you created the art piece yourself.

The first bazaar was held six months ago, and was such a success that Pang decided the event is worth repeating. Now, he plans to organise Art for Grabs every six months, so that young artists have a place to sell their items and people can purchase art works at affordable prices.

“This type of events benefits both the artists who want to sell their art works and people who wish to go home with something beautiful, and yet don’t have to pay too much for it,” said Pang.

At the recent two-day bazaar, around 80 lots were taken up by artists selling all types of things – from paintings and hand-painted T-shirts to mugs and cupcakes.

“I had also allocated six free lots for NGOs to advocate their causes here,” Pang said.

Local musicians were also given a chance to show off their talents. They were given a stage to perform and allowed to charge the audience a minimal fee.

The crowd was definitely enthusiastic.

Shazrin Ahmad Zani who was there with his mother said that he came to support the artists, whom he feels don’t get much recognition from Malaysians.

“We have many talented people here but, unfortunately, it’s difficult for them to break into the Malaysian scene. Sometimes, we are too brand conscious and don’t know the local talents that we’re pushing aside,” said the 20-year-old Information Technology student.

His mother, Wan Zainab Abu Karim, 49, said that it was her first time visiting such a bazaar and she was amazed by some of the works displayed there.

“They are indeed a talented lot and I do agree that art works such as these should not be priced too expensively,” she said.

The tee turns out quite nice with the unexpected stroke effect.
It is painted using fabric dye, a type of water base dye, completely safe!
So no need to worry about the colour fast.
Sorry for the washing machine fans, this piece really need hand wash because of the beads.

Fun time at Youth Malaysia '08

Hi friends, the 3 days showcase in PWTC is over. It was quite tiring, but I think it was fun! (ah... ting ling sumore u 'pull me down the water' n dance with u to win ipod shuffle huh? wahahaha...) It is truly an event for youth!

Most importantly, for me to met so many young creative entrepreneurs! They are amazing. You just can't believe they come out with such good artworks. I bought myself 2 hand painted tees for CNY! :)

Cassettee took part in the Trendsetting Fashion Extravaganza (not sure what they call it but they slot us in in this session). I've been given one official event tee to do whatever designs that I like on it but to remain the front Youth logo on Friday night, I have to return it back to the organizer the next day 8.30pm. I was so tired Friday night when I reach home, I didn't even think of it. The next day til noon, I think it was about 4pm, I suddenly remember I should have start working on it already! My goodness... at the end of the day I have only 4.5 hr for myself to design and complete that tee. Because of the time constrain (my fault actually, hehehe...) I only cut it and did some designs at the back.

Hi all, some updates again on cassettee's 2nd try in Annexe Central Market.
I feel sorry for myself that I couldn't be there on that day. Again... I have to attend to my company event in Batu Kawan.

Thanks to ting ling who helps me on displaying all the tees nicely and 'jaga' them the whole day :)
The response is not as good as the 1st time. Anyway, to gain more exposure, I believe more people have seen the real cassettee now. And I'm sure for those who came, you'll enjoy seeing those lovely little animals created by musedarling. Frankly speaking, I love them too!

Attended to the press screening of Flower In The Pocket in GSC Mid Valley this morning.

Da Huang Pictures is promoting this film in the Annexe Central Market last weekend. So happen that they were next to us, therefore I've got a chance to make these Pocket Cassettee to the little actors and actress :)

Frankly speaking, the movie is not bad. Worth your time for it.

The making of pocket tees

I'm glad that I've got this project from Mui, and complete them within the limited time given.
Heard some comments today (on the press screening in GSC) on the pocket. I should have done stronger stitching at the both corners of the pocket.

Yes, agreed, I should have do that. I've over-looked, this would be the weak point of the pocket. I saw one of the kids pocket's stitches being unsecured just by putting his hand in & out of the pocket.

Thought of doing a rework on the shirt for them, but realizing the shirt is giving out to the kids where they were already wearing it, so won't be able to get the tees back and do some rework on them. Feel so bad about that...

Anyway, point noted. Will do a better job next time with more senses...

I can't control myself... I just... can't keep the ribbons and needles away... because I'm so happy to see it to be in so many different colours... I'm still working on some more, more, more....

Actually it's quite tiring. I had my dinner 9.30pm since Monday.
8.00pm, I'm still pulling my hair in the office. Now I'm the one who switch off all the lights and make sure all the doors are lock before leaving office.
The week after Raya is the day we've been waiting for. After this great big event, I'm sure that I can get back to my usual working hour...

Unbelievable. I can't believe I did this. I felt so sorry that I've created such an ugly Miao!!

This is supposed to be a brooch. Well, still in the experimental stage on 'transforming' creatures into nice cute little handmade brooch.

Now take a look at the cat. I know you'll be laughing as when I just finished off my last stitch and the knot, I can't help laughing at my creation! Hahaha, can't wait to show Ice (my own real Miao) her little friend....

Got to know some new stitches this weekend. Thanks Eunice for the info sharing. I've learn a few embroidery stitching skills. In fact I've got many to learn, she lend me a book all about embroidery stitching.
Applied one of the stitch on this tee. You can see it on the close-up picture.
Same as the laundry mood, this one also quite labour intensive. Need a lot of time for the details.

Buying procedures

Some one was asking what is the buying procedure. How they gona pay and how am I going to deliver if they wana buy any one of the tee.

Ok, I'm sorry that I have not written anything on this (yet) cause I never think of people starting to ask about this so soon...

Anyway, this is how it runs:

1) Purchase: Tell me which design you want/ tell me which design you want and with what colour of accessories on it, i.e. the picture i posted was with blue buttons, but you might want one with orange buttons. I will look into your request and try to fulfill it. Don't worry, no extra charges but maybe you have to give me sometime to get it done just for you!

2) Payment: preferable to have buyer to bank in to my account within 3 working days upon confirmation on purchase. Account details will be given through email.

3) Shipping: Poslaju. The postage is FOC within KL & Klang Valley. We can even meet up (if possible) to make the deal. Other places in Malaysia will have a RM4.00 shipping charge on top of the item price. (Other countries please feel free to get in touch with me). Item will be shipped within 2 working days after received of payment. Otherwise/ unforeseen circumstances will be notified.

4) Received parcel: Now open the parcel! Please let me have your comments, good or bad. Your comments are always welcome as they are important for me to improve.

Yup, another thing which is not clear probably is the measurement of this M-size t-shirt.
For the M-size, the chest width is actually 15.5" (flat); the length is 21".

Cubes with 45 buttons

In the process of conceptualizing and the making, this is a very interesting t-shirt.
First of all, thanks Frank for the idea input! He's given great ideas on doing this.

We position all the buttons, trying in every different way that will looks the best. Finally we've come out with this line-up. We look at it closely and from far (purposely seeing it by using 'out-of-focus' - of course we're using our own EYES) and we found something more interesting! When you look at it with your 'out-of-focus', you will find yourself looking at 3 RGB cubes with tones!
Then I told to myself, I must stitch these buttons! It must be cool!

Well, at the end of the day I've got it done, but with my fingers numb. It is not easy to control the button position when you stitch, even though you've already do markings. I'd tried my very best on it, and the results are still, mmm... the blue cube slightly out of shape, haha!
I promise to myself, I must do another one with the same concept, maybe different colour buttons.

For the handmades, I only do ONE. So feel free to contact me if you are interested on any of them. I can make to order. :)

Cassettee's 1st handmade tee

There you go! The 1st hand made tee is done! ~Sweet pinky rabbit head on the left front chest~
Maybe it is a bit too simple. But it is also attractive because of its simplicity.

I can feel the satisfaction and achievement after I've completed it. The feeling was just, WOW! LOOK AT THIS, I'VE MADE THIS!

It's ashame that I can only do one handmade tee a night. Most of the time it's very tiring after work.

I couldn't believe it! What have I done on these tees??
*sob*sob*... I was trying to silkscreen the label at the collar, but... but...they turn out to be... to be... 'cacat'...*sob*sob*...
Yes, yes, I'm very stubborn thought that: ok, the next one will be better... ok, another one spoiled, never mind, the next one will be better.... and the results: I destroyed all 10 tees....
I did try on cloth before doing it on the actual tee. But maybe it's too close to the collar therefore that place is a bit uneven, not giving a 100% flash for the silkscreen.

Sigh. Anyway, these are suppose to be hand made tees, so.. hahahaha, having some 'cacat' seems to look more of a handmade one! (brilliant idea to make myself happier)

It was a lesson. I'm sure I'll get it well done on my next 10 tees!

Cassettee is born

Finally... After 3 months the name has been decided to be CASSETTEE, its 1st baby is born!
I'm being extremely busy since April on my full-time job. I'm glad that I can still made this happened.

This is not the very 1st artwork of all for tee, but don't know why, I like this horse thing very much, so decided to have it print. Did it only in 20pcs without thinking what am I gotta do with these 20 t-shirts, haha... (well, now i think I have to beg for your support ^.^)

Has been thinking for quite some time that I wanted to do some baby tee for girls. So, I just did it!
Mmmm... soon I wana do for kids! Hahahaa....

Hope you all like the new born 'baby'.
